As a formal linguist, I study natural language meaning as a fundamental component of human linguistic competence. I develop testable models of natural language as an interpreted formal system and as a species-unique component of human cognition.

I also study the interaction and division of labor between grammar and other domain-general aspects of cognition, in particular social cognition, which also bear on the way we manipulate and interpret symbols of language.

In the past I have explored these areas by looking mainly at quantification and plurality related phenomena. Topics that I have worked on include, broadly speaking, degree expressions, genericity and kind predication, and different forms of pragmatic implicature.

I currently lead the project Quantifiers at the Interfaces with my colleague and co-PI Laura Vela-Plo. Our general goal is to understand the formal properties of the elements that compose grammatical expressions of quantification, as well as their variation across constructions, languages and language families.
